Class AA Scouting Report

Penfield (18-0) — NY Rank: 4th
Baker/Baldwinsville (13-0) — NY Rank: 7th
Smithtown East (17-2) — NY Rank: 12th
Suffern (18-3) — NY Rank: 19th

Pool Play begins: 9:00 a.m.

The good news for Suffern: Playing so early in the morning can work towards the Mounties advantage, or be their downfall depending on if they get out of bed (both figuratively and literally). If the girls aren't to sluggish in the morning, they may have a chance to make their first State finals appearance in school history. Also good news for Suffern is the fact that they do not play back-to-back games. Again, this is something that can help or hurt them, but a break should be a good thing for such a long day. Coach Sean Barnes has an incredible report with his girls and seems to always have them relaxed before and during matches, the Mounties can turn some heads upstate, but to win it all will really be a challenge.

The bad news for Suffern: They've never been here before, they don't what the atmosphere is like or what is at stake; again, something that can work to their advantage or disadvantage. It's like sending a pinch hitter up in the 9th inning of a no-hitter, their nerves can be calm from not being in all game. While I said their lack of experience at this stage can be an aid, for the competition they are up against, it will be tough. Baker (which is in Baldwinsville, I don't know why they are called both) won the Class AA title last year and lost in the finals the year before that. The Bees stacked their season with tournaments, posting an impressive 42-4-4 record on the year. During their non-tournament contests, the Bees went 13-0 without dropping a set. Another team that stacked their season with tournaments, Penfield is loaded with experience (10 seniors) and height; checking-in four girls at 5'10" or higher. The Patriots went 36-3-3 on the year, dropping just six sets. With no State hardware to their credit, this may be the year the Pats step up and claim what they've been waiting for. I didn't really find much on Smithtown East, they just appear to be another very good team to make the final four with nothing that really stands out. Since Penfield will play, and most likely beat East, Suffern will have the ball in their court against Baker. A win will shoot their confidence through the roof, give them a big win and put Baker in the hole early on; three birds with one stone. For Suffern to have a remote chance, Penfield and Baker can not go 2-0, even if the Mounties still have two matches to go.
