Class B Scouting Report

CLASS AA:
John Glenn (13-1) NY Rank: 2nd
Pelham Memorial (20-1) NY Rank: 6th
Marcellus (15-1) NY Rank: 59th
Johnstown (14-5) NY Rank: 69th

Pool Play begins: 3:30 p.m.

The good news for Pelham:They have proven themselves through a tough Rockland/Westchester schedule this season that they are a perennial powerhouse. They posted laughable numbers at Sections, blowing out opponents by an average of 10 points per set; then mowed through Red Hook at Regionals on their home court. Mark Finegan's girls are extremely good, their 20-1 record is no joke, and the one loss to another powerhouse in Ursuline (in a 3-2 score by the way) is easily forgiven. These girls are hungry and want it more than anything. After 11 years of watching Hen Hud go on to the promised land, it's finally Pelham's turn at bat. The excellent news for Pelham is that they only need to be second-best on Saturday to have a title shot on Sunday, and Marcellus and Johnstown hardly look like worthy opponents for the mighty Pelicans.

The bad news for Pelham:The horrendous news for Pelham is that the other team in the final four just so happens to be arguably the best team in the entire tournament, in any class, John Glenn. These girls are no strangers to the State tournament, or to winning it. From 2003-2007, the Knights won four State titles and lost in the finals in 2006. Pelham is lucky to have just four seniors on their squad, meaning they will return another stacked team in 2012, but so will John Glenn. The Knights currently have five seniors and six juniors on their team, the only question is, how valuable are they to the squad? Should John Glenn graduate five starters and return six juniors who aren't very good, Pelham is looking good. As for this year, Pelham should definitely make their first State finals appearance, but will have nowhere near the easy road in the championship as they've had pretty much all season. I've said from the beginning of the year, I love Pelham - I think his girls are spunky, energentic and truly love to play the game and Mark Finegan is a classy, courteous man who is finally getting what he deserves after 22 years of overdue service. I really hope Pelham can bring it all home; if not, there's no shame in losing to the best around, and there's always next year. Go Pelicans!
