Mounties make it 2/2 for Section 1!

Harrison led by example Wednesday night, setting the stage for their Rockland counterparts, Suffern to win their Regional semifinal by the same score the Huskies did hours earlier.

Reigning Rockland player of the year, Elizabeth Flaherty led the Mounties with 26 kills in a 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16 win against Corning Free Academy. As always, teammate Taylor Anderson was not far behind, racking up 14 kills for the Mounties.

"To be perfectly honest, I think this team is clicking at the right time and playng very good volleyball," said coach Sean Barnes. "One more win will put us somewhere we have never been, so this would be a great milestone."

After four consecutive trips to the Section 1 championship, Barnes knows a thing or two about a team playing "very good volleyball." There is a reason why he is the reigning coach of the year. Barnes and his girls have combined a threatening force in November; momentum and confidence.

Most baseball fans will tell you that the team with the most momentum usually makes a very deep run into the postseason. Just look at the last decade of World Series teams, 2011 Cardinals, 2010 Giants, 2008 Rays, 2007 Rockies, etc.

"The girls are expecting a win, so we'll see how it translates," Barnes said. "I think they will go up there and win if they keep playing with great confidence."

Barnes concluded, "We have a high chance of going up and doing something we've never done before."

No Rockland team has won a State championship since the Red Raiders of North Rockland took home their second school title in 2000.

Suffern will play Pine Bush of Section 9, this Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Bard College in Annandale on Hudson, NY. The trip is about an hour and a half from Suffern High School.
