STATES 2011 — AM Heat Recaps and Standings!

9:00 — Penfield (1-0) defeats Smithtown East (0-1); 25-19, 25-21
Penfield won the first game, as expected, but Smithtown East is holding their own, 25-19. Penfield leads the series 1-0. Suffern's biggest match of the day will also be their first, taking on Baker at 10:00. While I'm more or less expecting a Suffern loss, this game will tell me a lot about the rest of their day. A win would pave the way for a Finals appearance tomorrow afternoon, a big loss may mean they may not do as well as I hoped, and a close loss should keep things as I expected and leave it up to their final two matches.
10:30 — Baker (1-0) defeats Suffern (0-1); 25-16, 25-11
Suffern held their own for a good portion of the first set, jumping out to an early lead, but the defending champions found their groove and stung the Mounties for the remainder of the match. It was nice to see that Suffern can compete with Baker, if even for half a set. Should they see the Bees again in the State championship, it should be a better match. You have to remember, here's a team playing in their first State tournament and their first match is against the defending champions. I've always said there's no better learning experience than being thrown into the fire, hopefully the Mounties can use their experience to mow down their final two games and give them a shot at the title.
11:00 — Baker (2-0) defeats Penfield (1-1)
The Bees showed that endurance is not an issue, marching away with a 25-18, 25-19 win against the Patriots to all but secure them a spot in the championship tomorrow to defend their Class AA title. Every other team in AA now has a loss, and it doesn't look like the Bees are losing anytime soon.
12:30 — Smithtown East (1-1) defeats Suffern (0-2)
It's the end to an incredible run. A team that had never won a Section title toppled volleyball powerhouses in the AA Sectional to win their first title. At Regionals, they took down two more teams

9:00 — Randolph (1-0) defeats Edison (0-1); 25-14, 25-15
Most of my attention was on the Edison/Randolph game, rather than Penfield/Smithtown East, mainly trying to find out how Haldane is going to fare in this bracket. To no surprise, Randolph is exceptionally good, but Edison really is not the team I was expecting. I know they are very young, but Randolph just man-handled them (or should I say 'wo'man-handled?). Randolph was red hot out of the gate, and never seemed to look back, taking care of Edison, 25-14 in the first game and 25-15 in the second game.
10:15 — Haldane (1-0) defeats Hartford (0-1); 25-14, 25-17
Haldane easily took care of Hartford in their first match, which really was no surprise to me, and looked very good doing it. With a game in between their next match, Blue Devils can rest up as Randolph tries to shatter Hartford's finals hopes in the 11:00 match. Coach Melissa Rossano had her eye on Edison going into the tournament, after they dropped from Class C this year. After their opening match loss to Randolph, a win for Haldane will set the stage for the Class D championship before pool play ends. Randolph is currently dominating the match against Hartford.
11:00 — Randolph (2-0) defeats Hartford (0-2); 25-14, 25-__
Defending Class D champions, Randolph have all but punched a ticket to yet another State championship match with an easy win over Hartford. Now 2-0, Randolph will need Haldane to close out their game against Edison to guarentee a spot in the finals tomorrow. Haldane won the first set and leads 18-8 in the second, so it's a pretty sure thing that the fifth match of the day in Class D will also be a preview of tomorrow's championship.
11:45 — Haldane (2-0) defeats Edison (0-2)
It just goes to show that a team on paper can definitely not be the team you see in person. Edison entered this tournament with high hopes, a successful past and as a target for the other Class D schools. Edison will leave this tournament with nothing more than a bunch of "couldda, shouldda, wouldda's" and a sour taste in their mouth. With the win, Haldane has now secured a berth in the State championship tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in a rematch of last year's championship against Randolph. The two will meet in the 1:00 p.m. game, but like the final two matches are meaningless; these two are in, Edison and Hartford are done.

Baker 3-0
Penfield 2-1
Smithtown East 1-2
Suffern 0-3

STANDINGS: CLASS B (Heat starts at 3:30 p.m.)
John Glenn 3-0
Pelham 2-1
Marcellus 1-2
Johnstown 0-3

Haldane 3-0
Randolph 2-1
Edison 1-2
Hartford 0-3
