STATES 2011 Suffern vs. C.W. Baker (Baldwinsville)

Game stats/updates below!
For updates and standings of the rest of the Classes (AA, B, D) please see post below!

Suffern's first match of the day will also be their biggest, taking on powerhouse Baker. While I'm more or less expecting a Suffern loss, this game will tell me a lot about the rest of their day. A win would pave the way for a Finals appearance tomorrow afternoon, a big loss may mean they may not do as well as I hoped, and a close loss means that while it won't be easy, a Finals hope is still alive. I will try to save every five minutes or so, so please just hit refresh to be up-to-date on the match!

Start time of match: 10:26 a.m.
Suffern out to an early 3-0 lead; the Mounties look fresh and ready to go.
Baker looks sluggish, terrible serving early on. Suffern leads 6-3.
Baker ties it up, but Suffern regains a quick lead. Suffern leads 7-6.
Baker's girls are big, and hit just as hard, but Suffern's defense is top notch today! Suffern leads 10-7.
Baker calls a timeout trailing 10-7 in the first game.
Baker rolls off five straight points to take a 12-10 lead.
Baker leads 15-12 after taking eight of nine points.
Suffern's setting is shaky; Baker leads 19-14.
Suffern calls a much needed timeout, trailing 20-14.
Baker in total control, leading 24-14.
Baker wins the first set 25-16. Baker leads the match 1-0.

Notes: I don't know if it's nervous jitters or the bitter cold in the gym, but Suffern does not look like the same team from earlier in the match. Their setting is subpar and opening easy gates for the big Baker girls to just slam them right back down. Baker never really seems to change their emotions, winning, losing, point streak - they just look like, "We've been here before. Been there, done that."

Second set: Start time 10:49 a.m.
Baker out to an early 4-1 lead.
Still in command, Baker leads 10-2.
Nothing's changed, Baker steam rolling 14-4.
Suffern starting to climb back a little, trailing 18-8.
Baker playing simple, "Hit 'em where they ain't" ball, leads 21-9.
Baker wins the set 25-11. Baker wins the match 2-0.

Match notes: Baker has certainly showed me why they've been so successful for so many years, and perhaps given the Mounties a lesson in States 101. The good news for the Mounties is that they are not giving points away (errors, serving into the net, etc.), the bad news is, Baker is just a very good team. Suffern will have a break now, during the Penfield/Baker game in a match that will almost certainly decide one of the State finals teams. With both at 1-0, each team will face a team with at least one loss in their final match of the day. It will be interesting to see how Penfield does against Baker, with Suffern facing them in their final match. I think Smithtown East is the weakest team in the AA bracket and Baker is the strongest, meaning the final spot to the championship could come down to the 2:00/2:30 match between Penfield and Suffern. It is WAY too cold in here to stick around and watch this point-by-point. I will be back for the Suffern/Smithtown East match game later.
